The Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun State Command, has reported that 161 people died in 415 road accidents across the state from January to May 2026.

Mr Afolabi Odunsi, the command’s spokesperson, shared this information during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Ota, Ogun State.

Odunsi noted that during this time, 1,007 people suffered various injuries from the accidents.

He also pointed out that compared to the 494 road traffic accidents recorded in the same period in 2025, the 415 accidents in 2026 showed a drop of 79 incidents.

The number of deaths also fell from 212 in 2025 to 161 in 2026.

In addition, Odunsi said the number of injured people decreased from 1,121 in 2025 to 1,007 in 2026.

“This achievement couldn’t have been possible without the hard work of FRSC personnel who educated the public on road safety,” he said.

Odunsi attributed many of the road accidents to traffic rule violations. Common issues included speeding, drunk driving, dangerous overtaking, using mobile phones while driving, overloading, and tyre bursts.

“We urge drivers to strictly follow traffic rules to avoid unnecessary loss of lives from road accidents,” he added.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property through stricter enforcement of traffic rules and ongoing public awareness campaigns.
