The Anambra State Police has arrested a 49-year-old man, Chima Ogumba, suspected of armed robbery. They found a pump-action gun and 50 live cartridges with him in Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area.
The police made the arrest on Monday. This information came from a statement by the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, on Tuesday.
Ikenga said the police officers, from the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu, acted on a tip-off. They went to the area and searched Ogumba, which led to the discovery of the gun and ammunition.
Ogumba could not explain why he had the firearm and the cartridges.
The statement said, “The Anambra State Police Command operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, on the morning of August 17, 2026, arrested a 49-year-old armed robbery suspect, Chima Ogumba.
“The team also recovered one pump-action gun and 50 live cartridges from him on Nkpor Road, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
“The operatives, upon storming the identified area, searched for the suspect, which led to the recovery of one pump-action gun and 50 live cartridges.
“The suspect was unable to give a satisfactory and reasonable account of his possession of the firearm and ammunition.”
Ikenga mentioned that the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has ordered a full investigation into Ogumba. This will help find out if he is involved in armed robbery or other crimes.
The investigation will also look into where the gun and ammunition came from and what Ogumba planned to do with them.
The commissioner stressed that the police remain committed to operations based on intelligence, proactive policing, targeted patrols, and tactical actions. Their goal is to find, disrupt, and break up criminal groups in the state.
