Police nab man over cult killing in Imo

The Imo State Police has arrested a 22-year-old man named Bright Adiene. He is linked to the suspected cult-related murder of Nnamdi Okeke in Owerri.

This incident happened on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

Police spokesperson DSP Henry Okoye shared this information in a statement. He also mentioned that the suspect is in custody and that they are trying to catch another suspect named Anyima.

"Investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify all those involved," Okoye said.

This arrest comes as reports show renewed violence between rival cult groups in Owerri. This violence follows the killing of a cult leader by a rival group weeks ago.

But the connection between the earlier killing and the latest incident is not confirmed.

In reaction to the situation, the Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Bosso, held a strategic security meeting on Sunday, October 18. This meeting included area commanders, divisional police officers, and tactical team leaders to discuss security and improve operations across the state.

According to Okoye, the operational commanders have been told to boost intelligence-led operations. They are to conduct targeted raids on known criminal hideouts, increase patrols in areas at risk, and respond quickly to new threats.

The police spokesperson added that Bosso has called for better collaboration with community leaders, youth groups, and other stakeholders. This is to enhance intelligence gathering and prevent further violence.

He also urged parents and guardians to keep an eye on their children's activities and friends. They should discourage involvement in cultism and report any relevant information to security agencies.

The police commissioner warned that anyone involved in cult-related violence will face serious legal consequences.

The command also asked residents to stay calm, alert, and law-abiding. They should provide trustworthy information that could aid ongoing investigations and other security efforts.
