Police nab man with homemade gun on highway

The police in Enugu State have arrested a 25-year-old man for having a locally made gun. This happened on the Enugu, Onitsha Expressway.

The police spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, shared this news in Enugu on Monday.

Mr Ndukwe, who is a superintendent of police, said the arrest took place on 3 July. Officers were conducting a stop-and-search operation at Ugwuoba in Oji River Local Government Area, close to the Enugu State, Anambra border.

During the search, officers found a hidden double-barreled pistol with the suspect.

"Preliminary investigation showed that the suspect got into a Toyota Sienna minivan at Solution Park in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, heading to Enugu. He was stopped and arrested by our alert officers," he said.

"We are still investigating to find out where the gun came from and if he was involved in other crimes. After the investigation, he will be taken to court."

This arrest happened just four days after another similar success. On 28 June, officers stopped a suspect in a tricycle and seized a firearm during a border security operation.

These recent arrests show the command's commitment to proactive policing and stopping illegal guns from entering Enugu State, according to Mr Ndukwe.

The Commissioner of Police in Enugu, Mamman Giwa, praised the officers for their alertness and professionalism.

Mr Giwa stressed that the command will continue its strong border security operations.

He also urged community members to stay alert and provide useful information to help fight crime in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the police have kept up their active border security efforts through the Nigeria Police Force's Handshake Patrol initiative.
