Officers from the Enugu State Police Command have arrested a 23-year-old suspected vandal named Nnaji Chidiebere. He was caught after getting electrocuted while trying to tamper with a power transformer.

This incident took place on August 17 along Ogbaike Road in Obollo-Afor, located in Udenu Local Government Area of the state. It caused panic among the local residents.

SP Daniel Ndukwe, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed the event in a statement released on Tuesday night. He said that community members found the suspect stuck inside the transformer area, suffering from serious burns, and quickly alerted the police.

Ndukwe added, "Police officers from the Udenu Division responded quickly to the community's alerts and found the suspect unconscious at the scene."

"Operatives took the suspect to a nearby medical facility, where he was revived before being moved to a specialist hospital for intensive care."

After he regained consciousness, Chidiebere told the police that he worked alone during the act. But Ndukwe noted that initial police investigations connected him to ongoing transformer vandalism in the area.

He said, "Detectives are carrying out further investigations to find out the extent of his activities, identify any accomplices, and prepare formal charges for prosecution."

In response to the arrest, the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Giwa, commended the Obollo-Afor community for their quick actions and cooperation with the police.

Giwa reiterated the command’s dedication to protecting public utility infrastructure. He also urged residents across Enugu State to stay alert and report any suspicious activities around public installations to the nearest police station.
