Six people die in Jigawa canoe accident

Responders found six bodies and rescued 15 passengers after a canoe accident in Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

Auwalu Sankara, the state commissioner for special duties and humanitarian affairs, confirmed this tragedy during a condolence visit to Malamawar Yandutse community, where it happened.

Mr Sankara said the incident took place around 1 p.m. on Sunday. A canoe with 30 to 40 passengers capsized while crossing the river. He added that 23 passengers have been found, but search and rescue efforts are still on to locate those missing.

Aminu Kafinta spoke for the community. He blamed the accident on overloading and said the number of passengers was too much for the canoe’s safe capacity.

"We saw them boarding the canoe and warned them that it could not carry everyone. We advised them to reduce the number of passengers, but unfortunately, they did not listen, and the canoe capsized shortly after taking off," Mr Kafinta said.

He called on the Jigawa State Government to find a long-term solution to the frequent water accidents in the area. He urged the government to build a bridge across the river to ensure safe passage for residents. He pointed out that similar deadly incidents happen almost every year.
