Three women die as vehicle falls from Lagos-Ibadan Expressway bridge

Three women died and 10 others were injured when a vehicle fell from the Long Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway into a ditch.

Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, shared this information in a statement on Friday. The accident happened around 5:24pm near Mikano on the Long Bridge heading towards Lagos.

Akinbiyi said three vehicles were involved in the crash: a white Toyota bus with the number KJA 247 YM, a white Toyota Corolla with the number BDG 867 HG, and a white Mazda bus with the number AGL 891 XX.

The statement revealed that 16 people were in the crash. This included 12 men and four women. Out of these, 10 people, which included nine men and one woman, suffered injuries.

According to the statement, three women died in the crash. “16 people were involved. 10 people were injured and three female adults died,” Akinbiyi stated.

Eyewitnesses said the crash happened because of excessive speeding and loss of control, which caused the vehicle to flip into the ditch. Akinbiyi mentioned that rescue teams from TRACE, the Federal Road Safety Corps, police, and the Ogun State Ambulance and Emergency Service quickly responded to the scene.

“Six injured passengers were taken to Lagos State Accident and Emergency Service by Ogun State Ambulance and Emergency Service. One injured person, who was also presumed dead, was taken away by the FRSC ambulance,” he added.

The statement also noted that two of the deceased were taken to the morgue at the General Hospital in Ifo. Another victim, who was presumed dead, was deposited at the Idera Hospital morgue in Sagamu. Other injured persons were taken to A.Z. Hospital by the FRSC for treatment.

Akinbiyi said the vehicle that fell into the ditch has been retrieved and moved to the Warewa Police Station along with the other vehicles involved for further investigation. “The vehicle that fell into the ditch has been recovered and moved to Warewa Police Station with the other vehicles involved for further investigation,” the statement said.

Akinbiyi also mentioned that the accident caused some traffic delays during the rescue operation, but normal traffic flow was restored after the evacuations were completed.
