The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has backed President Bola Tinubu’s economic changes. He said Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has risen from under $300 billion to about $375 billion in just two years.
Mr Yilwatda shared this information on Thursday in Jos, Plateau State. He spoke at a colloquium to celebrate his 58th birthday.
He said the rise in GDP, linked to Tinubu’s economic policies, shows that the changes are starting to bring results. This is happening even with the tough economic challenges that have come with these policies.
He added that Nigeria's economic growth is now faster than population growth. Improved investor confidence and rising exports are signs that the productive sector is recovering.
"For the first time, our exports have exceeded our imports. Investors are coming back to Nigeria because confidence is returning. The productive economy we have long wanted is beginning to take shape," Mr Yilwatda said.
The APC chairman mentioned that the administration's investments in deep seaports, railways, highways, and inland dry ports aim to lower business costs and boost Nigeria's ability to compete in both regional and international markets.
He stated that these infrastructure projects will also help the federal government reach its goal of growing the Nigerian economy to $1 trillion.
"Every kilometre of road built means more commerce, better security, and faster economic growth," he said.
Mr Yilwatda described these reforms as a long-term plan for economic restructuring, not just quick fixes for political advantage.
"President Tinubu has a master plan. He is not just building for today; he is creating a future for our children and grandchildren," he said.
Yilwatda Ties Reforms to 2027 Elections
The APC chairman also connected the administration’s economic achievements to the party’s chances in the 2027 general elections.
Mr Yilwatda said he would rally support for Mr Tinubu’s re-election, calling himself the president’s “chief campaigner.”
He is sure that the APC will win the 2027 elections.
These comments come amid the APC administration’s controversial economic decisions. These include the removal of the petrol subsidy and ongoing tax reforms. These actions have sparked major economic changes and public discussions.
Mutfwang Supports $1 Trillion Goal
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who gave the keynote address, also mentioned the Federal Government’s $1 trillion economic goal.
Mr Mutfwang pointed out that removing subsidies, restructuring taxes, and increasing investments in infrastructure, agriculture, manufacturing, and technology are some steps being taken to reach this goal.
However, he mainly focused on Mr Yilwatda’s career, calling him an academic, technocrat, and administrator.
"Leadership is ultimately a sacred trust. It requires vision beyond personal ambition; history does not just record titles; it remembers impact," the governor said.
The governor’s presence at the event is significant as he recently switched from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. This move has changed the political landscape in Plateau State.
