The Anambra State Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Offences Court in Awka has remanded 18-year-old Chibuike Agu, a tricycle rider, for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl.
He is facing one charge of defilement.
The Prosecutor, Inspector Chinyere Okechukwu, told the court that Agu committed the crime between 2025 and June 2026 at No. 1 Miss Eleme Street, Fegge, Onitsha.
Ms Okechukwu said, "The defendant, who takes the girl to school with his tricycle, sometime in 2025, took her to his house and had carnal knowledge of her."
She added that from then on, the girl visited him three times a week. During these visits, she stole food items and money from her aunt's shop to give to Agu.
The issue came to light when the aunt noticed that money was missing from her shop. The school also reported that the girl was only coming to school twice a week.
The aunt's husband questioned the girl. She then revealed that Agu had been sleeping with her.
After a medical examination at the Ntasi Sexual Assault Referral Centre at General Hospital, Enugu-Ukwu, a doctor confirmed that the girl had been defiled.
Ms Okechukwu said the crime is punishable under Section 34(2) of the state’s Child Rights Law from 2004.
She asked the court to keep Agu in a correctional facility, according to Section 130(2)(a)(b) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law from 2022.
The Chief Magistrate, U.E. Onochie, ordered that Agu be held at the Awka correctional facility. The case is adjourned until 5 August for hearing.
