US President Donald Trump has said his government is putting in place the “most crushing economic operation” against Iran. Analysts believe this shows how frustrated he is as his administration struggles in the Iran conflict.
In a post on Truth Social early Thursday, Trump stated that the sanctions will target “any country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran.”
The US has been enforcing strict economic sanctions on Iran for over 40 years. It is unclear how this latest announcement will change anything.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, responded to Trump’s threats in a post on X. He called it a “diversion from America’s own crisis: unprecedented debt & surging interest costs.”
“Doubling down on failed policies will only bring further defeat, and enmity of Iranians. US economic terrorism threatens global economy and sovereignty worldwide,” he added.
This announcement from Trump came less than a day after the UAE, a US ally, announced it was stopping all trade and economic cooperation with Iran.
