Secondary school students in Akwa Ibom State got mentorship on leadership, career development, and digital skills. This was through a program by the Mandela Washington Fellowship Alumni Association of Nigeria (MWFAAN). The goal is to prepare young people for responsible leadership.

The third phase of the Future Forward Mentorship Programme happened on 21 October at Uyo High School. It brought together students, mentors, education stakeholders, and partners.

The theme was “Building Purpose-Driven Student Leaders.” The focus was on giving students practical skills and advice for their studies, personal life, and future careers.

Nicole Compton from the United States Consulate General in Lagos spoke at the event. She praised the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Education for supporting youth education and development. She also commended the school management and MWFAAN for keeping the mentorship program going.

Compton urged students to take full advantage of this opportunity. She encouraged them to ask questions, share ideas, and learn actively from their mentors. Her words showed how important it is to engage young people early in their development.

Emem Udofia, the vice-principal of Uyo High School, welcomed everyone. She praised MWFAAN for bringing an international-level mentorship program to the students.

Susanne Ogunleye, the overall coordinator of the project, also shared a message. She encouraged students to use the mentorship network to grow their skills and reach their goals.

The sessions covered topics like inclusive leadership, civic integrity, self-confidence, effective communication, career discovery, digital skills, personal well-being, and life skills.

The interactive format allowed students to engage with facilitators, reflect on their dreams, and think of practical ways to use what they learned in school and daily life.

Participants received educational materials like branded school bags, reusable water bottles, and writing tools to support their studies.

James Akan, MWFAAN’s publicity secretary, coordinated the event. He had support from Uyi Effiom, the association’s South-east zonal coordinator.

The Future Forward Mentorship Programme is part of MWFAAN’s efforts to empower young Nigerians. The aim is to nurture a generation of confident, responsible, and purpose-driven leaders.

The association said this initiative wants to give secondary school students the guidance and practical knowledge they need to make smart choices about their education, personal growth, and future careers.
