A woman has lost her life after her car crashed into a building at Mongoro, heading towards Ile-Zik on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ikeja, Lagos.

She was driving a Toyota Sienna with the registration number LND 162 HB and was alone in the car when the accident happened.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) shared a statement on X on Sunday, saying the crash happened "over the weekend" but did not give exact details.

Preliminary reports show that the woman lost control of the vehicle. It veered off the road and crashed into the building.

LASTMA officials who were on routine patrol quickly got to the scene. They set up safety cones around the area to keep other drivers safe and prevent more accidents during the recovery work.

According to LASTMA, the accident briefly slowed down traffic, but things got back to normal after their officials stepped in.

Police officers from Afonka Police Post, part of the Shasha Divisional Police Headquarters, also helped LASTMA officials with the evacuation.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, called the crash a sad reminder of the risks of speeding and careless driving.

"Every journey must be undertaken with care, patience, and a strong commitment to traffic rules. No destination is worth the life of a person," Mr Bakare-Oki said.

He urged drivers to follow speed limits and drive carefully, adding that speeding is one of the main causes of deadly accidents.

Mr Bakare-Oki also told drivers to check their vehicles before hitting the road. He advised them to stop driving if they notice any mechanical issues until the problems are fixed properly.

This crash raises ongoing worries about road safety in Lagos.
