Anambra State Government has launched a plea bargain plan for suspects in criminal trials. This plan does not cover those charged with murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, and rape.
The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN, shared this news in a statement on Wednesday in Awka.
Nweke explained that this initiative aims to reduce the number of people in correctional centers and courts. It also supports ongoing reforms in the criminal justice system, following the vision of Governor Charles Soludo.
He added that the plea bargain will apply to all crimes under Anambra State laws, except for murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, and rape.
On July 22, a formal directive was sent to all prosecutors in the state. This order requires them to give defendants the appropriate plea bargain forms before they enter a plea in criminal cases.
The attorney-general called the initiative a major policy step to enhance how the criminal justice system operates in the state.
He noted that this is the first time a state government has offered a plea bargain option on such a wide scale to people facing criminal charges.
With this plea bargain plan, a defendant who admits guilt to a crime could receive a lighter sentence as decided by the court.
