Anambra teacher turns herself in after boy's death from flogging

The police in Anambra State say a teacher named Mrs Dim Ebere, 47, has come forward. She is the main suspect in the death of a 12-year-old boy in Adazi-Enu, Anaocha Local Government Area. The boy reportedly died from injuries he got during flogging at school.

Earlier, the police had started a manhunt for Mrs Ebere after the boy's death. He was said to have suffered severe injuries from the flogging.

On Saturday, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson, confirmed that the teacher turned herself in at the Neni Police Station. This happened after the Safe School Protection Squad carried out a thorough manhunt.

Ikenga mentioned that the operation involved officers from the Neni Divisional Police Headquarters. They also worked with community leaders and stakeholders in Adazi-Ani to track her down.

Currently, Mrs Ebere is in police custody. She will be moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for further investigation.

The police statement said, "Following sustained manhunt operations by the Anambra State Police Command’s Safe School Protection Squad, in collaboration with officers of the Neni Divisional Police Headquarters, and continuous engagement with stakeholders and community leaders in Adazi-Ani, the principal suspect, Mrs Dim Ebere, aged 47, has voluntarily presented herself at the Neni Police Station."

It added, "The suspect is currently in police custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, where the ongoing investigation will be concluded."

The police praised the community of Adazi-Ani for their help in encouraging the suspect to surrender. They also thanked the traditional institutions and other stakeholders for their support.

The family of the boy who died and the general public can be assured that the police are committed to delivering justice.

The police also asked everyone to stay calm. They urged the public not to take the law into their own hands. The police encouraged people to share any useful information that could assist in the investigations and other police work in the state.
