ASUU warns of strike over land allocation by Wike

ASUU has warned of a potential strike over land allocations made by FCT Minister Wike. The union demands the return of university land taken unlawfully.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Abuja Chapter, has accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, of wrongly giving university land to private companies and individuals.

During a press conference at the university on Tuesday, ASUU-UniAbuja Chairperson, Sylvanus Ugoh, a professor, said the union can no longer ensure peace on campus unless the FCT Minister takes back the land allocations.

“ASUU Uniabuja will no longer guarantee industrial harmony if the FCT Minister fails to reverse the unlawful taking away of University of Abuja land and allocating it to his friends and cronies,” the union said in a statement after the press conference.

ASUU also accused the minister of breaking an FCT High Court ruling that stops him from entering or taking over the university land.

The union said Mr Wike’s land allocation on 26 September to certain companies and individuals went against an order from the Maitama High Court, which said all parties must keep the current situation unchanged.

The union also asked President Bola Tinubu to step in and talk to Mr Wike “to allow peace and harmony to prevail on our campus.”

The union stated that it will use all legal options to fight any attempt to take the land.
