A fire has destroyed a bungalow at Okenwa Housing Estate, near Tourist Gardens Hotels and close to the Anambra State Government House in Awka. The fire damaged property and household appliances.

No one was hurt in the incident that happened on Sunday.

The Anambra State Fire Service said early checks showed the fire might have started from a spark in an electrical circuit. But they are still confirming the exact cause.

In a statement on Monday, the service’s Media and Publicity Unit, led by Chukwudi Chiketa, said firefighters rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call. They successfully put out the fire, stopping it from spreading to nearby buildings.

Chiketa said the fire service got the emergency call at about 9:40 am after residents alerted the fire station.

Firefighters were quickly sent to the site to control the fire.

“The Anambra State Fire Service has successfully contained and extinguished a fire outbreak that affected a bungalow at Okenwa Housing Estate, behind Tourist Gardens Hotels, near the Government House, Awka, on Sunday.

“On arrival, the firefighters began efforts to control the blaze and successfully extinguished it, preventing it from spreading to nearby properties,” the statement said.

The service pointed out that the bungalows were close to each other on the same property. This made it easier for the fire to spread to neighboring buildings.

After the firefighting operation, the area was secured. The personnel left the scene at about 12:40 pm.

The service reminded residents to ensure their electrical installations are done properly. They should avoid overloading circuits and fix faulty wiring quickly to help prevent fire outbreaks.

They also asked residents to report fire emergencies without delay. This helps ensure a fast response and reduces damage to lives and property.
