The Gombe State Police have arrested eight people linked to a criminal gang accused of armed robbery and internet fraud in various communities in the state.

The suspects were taken into custody after the police looked into a robbery that happened on June 7, 2026, in Wuro Birji, Akko Local Government Area.

According to a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, Buhari Abdullahi, two victims, Hassan Muhammad and Jibril Hassan, reported that armed men with cutlasses broke into their homes and stole their mobile phones.

The police noted that the suspects later used information from the stolen phones to access the victims’ bank accounts without permission.

The statement disclosed that the suspects fraudulently withdrew N296,790 from one victim’s GTBank account and also took a Quick Loan of N205,205. This made the total amount stolen more than N500,000.

"After receiving reliable intelligence and carefully analyzing the fraudulent transactions, officers traced one transaction to a Moniepoint account. This led to the arrest of the first suspect, Mustapha Kabiru, also known as ‘Musty Bobo.’ He is a 19-year-old Computer Science student at the Federal Polytechnic, Kaltungo," the statement explained.

The police said Kabiru admitted during questioning that he used information from stolen phones to get into victims’ bank accounts and carry out fraud.

"His confession led to the arrest of seven more suspects," the statement added.

The police mentioned that further investigations showed the gang was linked to over 13 similar cases in Wuro Birji, Riyal, Bomala, and Jauro Jatau communities.

The police are still investigating and are working hard to catch other gang members who are still on the run.

The Commissioner of Police, Umar Ahmed Chuso, praised the officers for their hard work and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to fighting violent crimes and cybercrimes.

"The command is dedicated to tackling all kinds of crime, including cybercrime and violent offenses. Members of the public are encouraged to stay alert, protect their personal information and digital devices, and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station," the commissioner said.
