Governor Lawal Launches Education Reforms and Distributes Curricula in Zamfara

Governor Dauda Lawal has signed Executive Orders to create a system for education funding, school safety, classification, quality checks, health, and security.

On Tuesday, he also started giving out national curricula to public schools at a meeting with education leaders at the Government House in Gusau.

A statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, said the reforms focus on school management, feeding programs, student welfare, safe transport, and safe school practices. It also covers how graduation ceremonies will be handled.

The reforms will include unified exams, health services in schools, hiring school leaders based on merit, inclusive education, and promoting STEM, TVET, and digital learning.

In his speech, Governor Lawal said education is more than just a social service. He stated, “It is the most powerful instrument for reducing poverty, promoting peace, strengthening security, stimulating economic growth, and preparing future generations to compete in an increasingly knowledge-driven world.

“Today, we are turning that commitment into concrete institutional reforms by signing and presenting these Executive Orders.

“These Executive Orders are not isolated directives. Together, they make up a governance framework aimed at strengthening school management, improving accountability, protecting educational resources, boosting funding, ensuring safety, raising educational standards, improving learning outcomes, and preparing our children for the demands of the twenty-first century.”

Governor Lawal pointed out that for many years, education reforms mainly focused on physical buildings. While classrooms and labs are important, he noted that just having structures does not ensure quality education.

Earlier, Abdulmalik Abubakar Gajam, Zamfara State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, said successful education systems rely on teamwork among governments, teachers, parents, communities, traditional leaders, development partners, and the private sector.

“These reforms will not just stay as policy papers. They will show in safer schools, better management, healthier students, improved teaching, better educational results, and more public trust in our education system,” Mr Gajam said.
