Gully Erosion Wrecks Over 30 Homes in Edo Community

A severe gully in Agor-Uwagboe community has destroyed more than 30 houses and blocked access roads, raising concerns about the area's future.

A serious gully has destroyed more than 30 houses in Agor-Uwagboe community in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.

This gully has also blocked the community’s access road through Ofumwengbe and Egbiri communities. A wooden bridge was built to allow motorcycles to pass.

Ernest Uwagboe, a resident who has been raising awareness about the community's problems, said the gully is spreading into the area.

Uwagboe is worried that if the state government does not step in, the entire community could be swallowed by the gully in three years.

“Again, I will say it is time for the government to look into the matter. About 30 houses have already been lost to the gully, which keeps expanding every year.

“In three years, the community may no longer be in existence if the gully is not checked,” he added.

Kenneth Adoni, a community spokesman, said they have written several letters to different government agencies but have not received any help.

“We are begging Governor Monday Okpebholo to come and help us. For the past three years, the gully has caused lots of problems. We cannot cross to the other communities. Whenever it rains, children cannot go to school.

“We have also written letters to various government agencies on the need to fix the issue, but no one has come to our aid. Hopefully, this issue will be resolved soon,” he added.
