Imo State Moves Local Government Elections to November 14

The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission has set a new date for the local government elections. The elections will now take place on Saturday, November 14, 2026, across the 27 local government areas in the state.

This information came from a press release signed by the Commission's Chairman, Charles Ejiogu. This followed talks with key groups, including the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and registered political parties, on Tuesday in Owerri.

The Commission said the decision came after a weekend meeting with stakeholders. Everyone at the meeting urged ISIEC to quickly announce a new date for the elections.

The elections were first set for September 26, 2026. They were postponed after some members of IPAC went to court to ask for more time on the electoral timetable.

ISIEC then changed the date to November 7 but had to postpone it again on October 31. This was done after speaking with political parties and other groups, but they did not give a new date then.

The Commission explained that the earlier date of November 7, 2026, was not realistic. So, they moved the elections to November 14.

The statement said, “The elections will produce 27 Local Government Council Chairmen and 305 Councillors across the state.”

“ISIEC has consequently directed the leadership of all registered political parties to visit its headquarters to collect the official election timetable and guidelines.”

The Commission also stated that it is prepared to observe the primary elections of political parties for both chairmanship and councillorship candidates. This will follow the relevant electoral laws.

ISIEC reaffirmed its commitment to holding peaceful, transparent, free, and credible elections. They assured political parties, candidates, and voters that there would be a fair chance for everyone to participate.

Finally, the Commission asked for the understanding and cooperation of all stakeholders to help ensure the successful conduct of the council elections on November 14.
