Kano Governor names ex-anti-corruption chief to tackle drug abuse

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has shown full trust in the new Special Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. This group will be led by the state’s former anti-corruption chief, Muhuyi Magaji.

While launching the task force on Wednesday, Governor Yusuf shared his hope that Mr Magaji will effectively lead the fight against drugs. He mentioned that Mr Magaji's strong history in anti-corruption will help him in this new job.

"All individuals appointed to the Task Force committee were selected strictly on merit following thorough scrutiny and rigorous background checks," the Governor said. "The final list represents a high-calibre team, especially its chairman, Mr Magaji, who is known for his perseverance, endurance, and fearless leadership."

"During his time as Chairman of the Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, his track record spoke for itself; his name alone struck fear into suspects. He served the state well and leaves a strong legacy. While keeping him at the anti-corruption agency would have been ideal, this new role allows him to gain broader experience and engage in wider consultations."

The Governor announced that the committee’s work starts immediately. The Task Force will report directly to the Office of the Governor, which will get regular updates and hold ongoing discussions. Governor Yusuf pointed out that creating this unit is part of his administration’s promise to fight the rising issues of drug abuse and drug-related crime in Kano State.

He described drug abuse as one of the biggest threats to Kano’s youth. He warned that it leads to violent crime, breaks families apart, harms the local economy, and disrupts social stability.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Magaji thanked Governor Yusuf for trusting him and the other committee members. He promised the Governor and the people of Kano State that the Task Force would carry out its duties with honesty, professionalism, and strong commitment.

Mr Magaji understood the weight of their responsibility. He stated that the Task Force would work closely with security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations, schools, and community leaders to fight drug abuse and promote lasting peace.
