Mob Attacks Police Station After Farmer's Death in Ondo

Two police officers were shot and injured when a mob attacked a police station in Ala, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State. This happened after the killing of a farmer named Rasheed Hassan.

The police said they have arrested 14 people linked to the attack on the station.

The trouble started when two suspects, arrested for Hassan’s death, were taken to the Ala Divisional Police Headquarters. The mob tried to take them away for an extrajudicial killing.

The Ondo State Police Command shared this news in a statement from their Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, on Thursday. The statement condemned the attack on the police officers and the station.

The statement said, “Preliminary observations revealed deep cuts to the victim’s head and other parts of his body, while his belongings were reportedly missing.

“Investigations immediately commenced to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killing.

“On October 26, 2026, the Ala Youth President reportedly arrested two suspects in connection with the incident.

“While taking the suspects to the police station, he was approached by an angry mob demanding the suspects be handed over for extrajudicial killing.

“He sought refuge at the Ala Divisional Police Headquarters with the suspects.

“However, the mob followed them and attacked the police station.”

The statement said the mob threw stones and other dangerous items while resisting police efforts to help.

In response, the police sent tactical teams to restore order and protect lives.

The command reported that around 1:45 am on Tuesday, police operatives rescued the two suspects from the mob.

But on their way to Akure, the patrol team was attacked. Two police officers got gunshot injuries from pellets fired from a youth pump-action firearm.

The injured officers were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

“During the incident, two police officers sustained gunshot injuries from pellets allegedly fired from a youth pump-action firearm.

“The injured officers were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.”

After the attack, the police arrested 14 people in connection with the assault on the officers and the police station.

“The investigations are ongoing to establish the individual roles of those arrested and ensure that anyone found culpable faces the full weight of the law,” the statement added.

The Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, condemned the attack on the officers and the police facility. He called mob actions and attempts to block police work unacceptable.

He said, “No individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands, regardless of the gravity of any alleged crime.”

He warned that the command would not accept attacks on police stations, assaults on officers, or actions that undermine lawful police work.

Ohagwu assured the public that they are thoroughly investigating the farmer’s death and the violence that followed. He emphasized that anyone found guilty would face the law.

The police command said they have increased security in the area to prevent more violence. They noted that things have calmed down in the community, but they are still monitoring security.

They urged residents to stay calm, work with security agencies, and provide useful information for the ongoing investigations.

The command also asked community leaders and youth groups to stop mob actions and encourage people to let the justice system work.
