The Nigerian Navy has found a large dugout reservoir with about 10,000 litres of what looks like crude oil in the Oteghele area of Delta State.
The navy shared this news in a statement from Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the Director of Naval Information. He made this statement available to journalists on Friday in Abuja.
Captain Folorunsho said that the discovery happened on Wednesday. This was during an anti-crude oil theft operation by personnel of NNS DELTA in their area of operations.
He explained that the operation was based on reliable intelligence the Navy received about suspected illegal oil activities in the area.
According to Captain Folorunsho, the dugout reservoir held the substance believed to be illegally sourced crude oil, which is around 10,000 litres.
He added that the reservoir and its contents were “handled in accordance with established procedures.” This action stopped the suspected stolen crude oil from being used for illegal activities.
The director mentioned that this recent operation is part of the navy's ongoing efforts to stop criminals from accessing crude oil and to dismantle structures used for illegal oil activities.
