The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Zamfara Command, has arrested nine people for stealing roofing zinc from Tsageru Primary School in Tsafe Local Government Area.
ASC Umar Muhammad, the Head of Public Relations, shared this news at a press conference in Gusau on Monday.
Muhammad explained that the matter started when Mr Abdulrahman Aliyu, the Education Secretary of Tsafe LGA, reported the theft.
“Following the report, our operatives on Sept. 8, at about 3:02 p.m., arrested Alhaji Haruna Amadu, 55, from Tsageru village. He then named eight other people involved in the theft.
“Initial investigations showed that from Sept. 5 to 8, the suspects planned to remove roofing zinc from three classrooms in the school.
The suspects arrested are: Alhaji Haruna Amadu, 55; Aliyu Aliyu, 40; Isah Umar, 40; Hassan Shehu, 35; Garba Ibrahim, 60; Ibrahim Lawali, 55; Abdullahi Usman, 35; Abubakar Ibrahim, 45; and Alhaji Abubakar Aliyu, 40,” he said.
The image maker reported that all nine suspects confessed to the crime. They also admitted to trying to bribe the District Head, Sarkin Gabas Aliyu, and the Village Head, Magaji Kabiru Salisu.
“Both traditional rulers turned down their offer and advised them against such actions,” the image maker added.
He mentioned that the suspects confessed they did not get permission from the Zamfara Universal Basic Education Board before taking the zinc.
They revealed that they wanted to sell the roofing zinc to get money for paying levies to access farmlands during the farming season.
The command estimated the damage to the three classrooms at N4.5 million.
The NSCDC emphasized its “zero tolerance for crime and economic sabotage” and promised to keep protecting public property in the state.
