The police in Anambra State, in South-east Nigeria, have arrested a 36-year-old woman. She was allegedly seen in a shocking video using sex toys on a minor.
Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga shared this news on Friday. He confirmed that the woman, Anulika Onyeanusia, was arrested earlier that day.
Ikenga, a superintendent of police, mentioned that the officers who made the arrest also rescued four children. These children are aged two, three, six, and nine years old.
The police found sex toys and other items that will help with the ongoing investigation. Ikenga said the suspect is under investigation for a case of child pornography in the Onitsha area of the state.
"The suspect is in police custody as the Command works hard on the investigation. We are looking into the details of the alleged offence and any involvement of other people," he stated.
He also noted that the suspect's husband is being questioned. This is to find out if he has any link to the case.
Ikenga said that the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Nnanna Ama, is "deeply disturbed" by this incident. He called it unacceptable, especially since it involves children who cannot protect themselves.
The commissioner has ordered a thorough and professional investigation. He assured that the rescued children will get proper care and protection.
The police chief emphasized that the safety and well-being of the rescued children are top priorities. Beyond investigating and prosecuting the suspect, they want to ensure the children are treated with dignity.
He added that the police will team up with child-protection agencies and support groups. This is to make sure the victims receive the necessary care, protection, and counseling for their healing.
"We will protect their identities and privacy throughout the process. They will be treated with compassion and sensitivity," he said.
The police commissioner praised local vigilante groups, bloggers, and residents. They provided information that helped the police arrest the suspect.
In Nigeria, sexual exploitation and child pornography are illegal. Section 32 of the Child Rights Act 2003 forbids the sexual abuse and exploitation of children.
If convicted, offenders face up to 14 years in prison according to Section 32(2) of the Act.
Child pornography is also banned under Section 17 (1) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition), Enforcement and Administration Act 2015.
Section 17(2) of this Act states that convicted offenders will face at least seven years in prison and a fine of not less than N1 million.
The Cybercrimes Act 2024 has also made child pornography a crime.
Many people have been convicted for child pornography or sexual exploitation of children in Nigeria.
