The Cross River State Police has arrested a 41-year-old man, Bassey Ekpo, for allegedly setting a house on fire at 8 Miles in Calabar, the state capital.
In a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, shared with journalists on Saturday in Calabar, the police reported that the incident happened on Friday, September 11, 2026. The occupant of the house, Ekemini Stephen, reported the incident at the Ikot Omin Police Division.
The statement said that with the help of neighbors, the suspect was caught and taken to the police station.
The statement said, “The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 41-year-old man, Bassey Ekpo, in connection with the alleged setting ablaze of a residence at 8 Miles, Calabar.
“The incident was reported today, Friday, 11 September 2026 at the Ikot Omin police division by the occupant of the house, Ekemini Stephen. He stated that while he was in church, he got a call from a neighbor telling him that his house was on fire.”
The police spokesperson said that during the first questioning, the suspect claimed that his 61-year-old mother sent him.
He added that police officers visited the scene and took photographs as part of gathering evidence.
“With the assistance of neighbors, the suspect was caught and brought to the Police Station. During preliminary questioning, he allegedly claimed that he was sent by his 61-year-old mother, who is currently on the run and has been named as the alleged mastermind,” part of the statement said.
ASP Eitokpah said the investigation is ongoing to find out more about the incident and see if others are involved.
The police also assured residents that anyone found guilty will face the full consequences of the law.
