Residents Protest After Two Women Are Killed in Plateau

Tension rose in Gero, a community in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Monday. This came after suspected gunmen killed two women, leading to angry protests by residents who demanded better security and justice.

The bodies of the women were found in the early hours of Monday in the community, which is behind the Jos South Local Government Secretariat.

Protesters, including many women and youths, carried the bodies to the council secretariat. They accused the authorities of failing to protect them from ongoing attacks.

The protesters also blocked parts of the road leading to the secretariat, stopping vehicles and demanding urgent government action and the arrest of the killers.

One protester, Mary Chollom, spoke about the incident. She said it is another painful reminder of the ongoing insecurity in Plateau State.

“We are tired of burying our loved ones. These women did nothing to deserve this. Government and security agencies must take decisive action to stop these senseless killings and ensure those responsible are brought to justice,” she said.

Ms Chollom called on both the federal and Plateau State governments to boost security in vulnerable areas. She also urged security agencies to increase surveillance to catch and prosecute the attackers.

Later, security personnel were sent to the Jos South Local Government Secretariat and nearby areas. They aimed to prevent any further chaos, while calm slowly returned to the community.

Efforts to get an official comment from the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, Alfred Alabo, did not succeed. He did not answer calls or messages when this report was being prepared.

This latest attack adds to a string of violent acts that have raised worries about security in parts of Plateau State. This is despite ongoing efforts by security agencies to reduce the violence.
