The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced three men involved in the kidnapping of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State to life in prison.
Justice Salim Ibrahim stated that the life sentence would start from the day the suspects were arrested, according to Channels TV.
Before the sentencing, the defence lawyer asked the court for mercy. He said the men were first-time offenders who admitted their guilt.
The lawyer argued that their guilty plea showed they were sorry for their actions. He also mentioned that the crimes were not directly linked to the kidnapping.
He told the court that the convicts were family men with children and elderly parents who relied on them for support.
The defence team asked the judge to give them “a second chance at life” by imposing a lighter sentence.
But the prosecution disagreed with the request for leniency. They argued that the men knew about the other people involved in the crime and, as responsible citizens, should have reported it to the authorities instead of hiding the information.
The court then sentenced the three men to life imprisonment.
