President Donald Trump has warned of a strong response after Iran fired missiles at a US base in Jordan.
Trump's warning came just five days after he stopped a 13-day bombing campaign. Tehran had also paused its attacks on US interests in the Gulf.
"We’ll be hitting them hard," he said on Wednesday, according to Fox News. He did not say when the attacks might happen.
Iran launched the missile strike on Tuesday while Trump was meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. Netanyahu has been urging for action against Iran.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on X that it intercepted several ballistic missiles in an attempted surprise attack on US forces in the Middle East.
The Command stated, "At 5:45 pm ET today, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iran in an attempted surprise attack on US forces based in the Middle East.
"All Iranian missiles were successfully intercepted. US forces remain vigilant and at a high state of readiness."
Al Jazeera reported that five missiles were intercepted over Jordan. The IRGC confirmed the attack too, saying its air force targeted a US airbase and Central Command center in Jordan "with several ballistic missiles."
It added, "As long as threats against the Islamic Republic of Iran continue and illegal and vicious actions by American forces against our interests continue, the resistance will continue."
This attack from Iran followed US and Saudi Arabia's joint strikes on Iraq’s Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF). This move raised tensions in the area.
The previous attack killed 20 members of the PMF, which is an Iraqi armed group recognized by the state and has ties to Iran.
CENTCOM stated that the attack was a response to assaults by Iraqi militias on American troops and Saudi energy facilities.
