The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) will graduate 12,895 students at its 55th Convocation. Out of these, 168 students will receive First Class honours.
The Vice-Chancellor, Simon Ortuanya, shared this news on Wednesday during a press briefing at the university’s Business School Auditorium in Enugu.
Professor Ortuanya said 10,641 graduands will get first degrees and diplomas, including the 168 First Class graduates. Additionally, 2,944 students will be awarded higher degrees.
He explained that the higher degrees include 1,390 doctoral degrees, 1,340 master’s degrees, and 214 postgraduate diplomas.
The university will also give honorary doctorate degrees to four notable personalities for their contributions to leadership, public service, and human development.
The recipients are First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, Williams Agbo, Kaycee Orji, and William Richardson.
Two respected scholars from the institution, Peter-Jazzy Ezeh and Boniface Obinna Okere, will also be honoured with the title of professor emeritus.
Mr Ortuanya called the convocation a celebration of academic success and a moment of joy for graduates and their families.
He mentioned that the convocation lecture will be delivered on 23 July by Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State. The lecture will be chaired by Chinedu Nebo, the 12th Vice-Chancellor of UNN and the current Vice-Chancellor of the University on the Niger, Umunya, Anambra.
He emphasized his administration’s goal to make UNN a globally competitive institution through quality teaching, research, digital innovation, entrepreneurship, and community involvement.
In the last 11 months, the university has started major repairs on old facilities across its campuses.
The Vice-Chancellor mentioned key projects like rebuilding internal roads, fixing student hostels, ongoing work on the long-neglected Senate Building, and constructing hostels and labs at the College of Medicine in Ituku-Ozalla. They are also restoring the university’s environment.
He stated that the university has achieved important academic milestones. The admission quota for MBBS has increased from 180 to 400 and for dentistry from 15 to 60, thanks to accreditation by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
Mr Ortuanya added that the National Universities Commission has approved splitting the Department of Mass Communication into five specialized degree programmes to match global communication trends.
He said these ongoing projects and academic changes show the university's dedication to build trust, enhance academic excellence, and secure a better future for upcoming students.
