Young Woman Takes Her Life After Breakup and Three Abortions

A 25-year-old woman has taken her own life in Anambra State after breaking up with her boyfriend. She reportedly had three abortions while with him.

The police spokesperson in Anambra, Tochukwu Ikenga, shared this in a statement on Saturday. He said the incident happened on Thursday in Onitsha, known as the state’s commercial hub.

Mr Ikenga, who is a superintendent of police, said they found the woman dead under unclear circumstances on Thursday.

He added, "A note believed to be a suicide message was found at the scene with a troubling story about a breakup after having three abortions for an unidentified man named Chigozie."

He also mentioned that the Commissioner of Police in Anambra, Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered the case to be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka. This is for a thorough investigation.

Mr Orutugu pointed out the need for better parental guidance and emotional support for young people. He said parents and guardians need to be more involved in their children's lives.

He stressed that they should pay more attention to the emotional health, social interactions, and behavior of their children.

"The Anambra State Police Command is dedicated to protecting lives and property. We will work with relevant groups to tackle social issues affecting safety and well-being in society," he said.

The police chief called on community leaders, schools, religious groups, and civil society organizations to step up their advocacy and mentorship programs. This is to promote good values, resilience, and responsible living among the youth.

He expressed deep worry about the rising number of troubling incidents in society. He described the trend as "worrisome."
