YPP candidate criticizes FG’s 90-day economic plan

The presidential candidate of the Young Progressives Party, Peter Agada, has slammed the Federal Government’s 90-day plan aimed at reducing the cost of living. He called it a campaign tactic that does not tackle Nigeria’s real economic issues.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, announced that the National Economic Council approved the plan to help ease the burden of economic hardship on citizens.

In a statement released on Saturday in Abuja, Agada questioned the success of past government efforts. This includes attempts to cut petrol prices, remove illegal fees, and support farmers and businesses.

Agada also raised concerns about the timing of this plan, especially with the 2027 general election approaching. "These promises back and forth are for Nigerians to believe and vote them back into office. So after the election, what happens?" he asked.

"I think that I align with those who opined that the economic team of Mr President has failed to address Nigeria’s numerous economic challenges.

“I have listened to many television and radio analysts, but none spoke positively in support of the economic team. And that has got to show that they have lost their bearings," he said.

Agada reminded everyone that the government had announced several programs after removing the petrol subsidy in 2023. This included funding for manufacturing, small businesses, agriculture, and the compressed natural gas initiative.

"And a year after, you went and removed all the tariff on food importation, and that didn’t fight food inflation," he said.

He argued that these measures have not really dealt with the rising cost of living, especially food prices. Agada urged Nigerians to hold the government accountable for its economic decisions, saying new promises should be judged by real results.

The YPP candidate also shared his campaign council’s LabourDirect strategy. He believes this ward-to-ward plan could boost local economic activities and empower Nigerians within 60 days.

"#LabourDirect, the ward-to-ward strategy of my Campaign Council, remains an option that can capture all Nigerians within 60 days of implementation," he said.

Agada urged the Federal Government to think about adopting this proposal. He insisted that there should be more focus on job creation, local production, and development at the community level.
