Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, welcomed 13-year-old Chimdiebube Onwubiko, an international STEM Olympiad gold medalist, at the Government House in Enugu on Monday. The governor praised the young scholar for making the state proud and rewarded him, his Mathematics teacher, and Evergreen Schools with cash gifts.
Chimdiebube is a JSS 3 student at Evergreen College in Enugu. He won a gold medal in Mathematics and a silver medal in Science in the Grades 9, 11 category at the International STEM Olympiad held in Rome, Italy. The event featured participants from 54 countries.
During the reception at the Lion Building, Governor Mbah called the student’s achievement a proud moment for Enugu State. He commended both Chimdiebube and his teachers for their hard work and commitment to excellence.
“We are so proud of you and your teachers,” the governor said. He encouraged the young champion to keep up his great performance and aim for even bigger achievements.
Governor Mbah also talked about his administration’s plan to improve access to quality education. He mentioned that the state’s Smart Green Schools initiative aims to ensure every child has access to world-class learning opportunities, no matter where they are.
In a lively chat, Governor Mbah called Onwubiko “a magician” in Mathematics and asked about his secret to success and future plans. The student shared that his love for competition, willingness to make sacrifices, and inspiration from his high-achieving classmates motivate him to excel.
Reflecting on his path to success, Onwubiko said his achievement came from years of discipline, hard work, and constant preparation. He emphasized that while teachers play a big part, students must also be dedicated to excellence.
Doris Chinedu-Okoro, the Chief Executive Officer of Evergreen Schools, spoke on behalf of the school. She said the Olympiad success shows the school’s commitment to academic excellence and thorough preparation. She expressed confidence that their students will keep shining on the global stage.
Chisom Unachukwu, Onwubiko’s Mathematics teacher, said the student’s success was the result of years of careful preparation and determination. He recalled the bravery Onwubiko showed in competing against older participants at the international event.
To wrap up the reception, Governor Mbah announced cash rewards of ₦2 million to Chimdiebube Onwubiko, ₦2 million to his Mathematics teacher, Chisom Unachukwu, and ₦1 million to Evergreen Schools for their remarkable achievement.
Chimdiebube was joined by Doris Chinedu-Okoro, the Chief Executive Officer of Evergreen Schools, his Mathematics teacher, Chisom Unachukwu, and the Vice Principal for Special Programmes, Chimbuchi Chinedu-Okoro.
