Enugu State starts digitizing land survey records

The Enugu State Government has started a Continuous Survey Revalidation and Digitisation Exercise. This is part of the ongoing Survey Records Digitisation Programme. The goal is to set up a digital, clear, and trustworthy land administration system in the state.

According to the government, this exercise is an important step in changing how land and survey records are managed. It aims to protect property rights, reduce disputes from lost or faulty records, and build public trust in land management.

This initiative is also part of the digital transformation plan of Governor Peter Mbah's administration.

A statement from the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Chidiebere Onyia, explained that the exercise will help verify land records in the state. It will ensure they are digitally captured and mapped out.

The government aims to create “a fully digital, transparent, and verifiable land administration framework that protects property rights, eliminates disputes arising from lost or defective records, and strengthens public confidence in land administration.”

The statement highlighted that all landowners, estate developers, surveyors, and property owners need to get involved to make sure the process is accurate and complete.

People affected by this exercise need to submit their Survey Plans, Layout Approvals, and other land documents. This is for verification, revalidation, digital ID creation, and geographic mapping. They will also receive Digital Land Identity Cards.

To make things quicker and easier, the government has set up six revalidation centres around the state. These centres are located at:

• Office of the Surveyor General, 5/27 Colliery Avenue, GRA, Enugu
• Enugu State Housing Development Corporation (ESHDC) Headquarters, No. 21 Kingsway Road, GRA, Enugu
• Enugu Geographic Information System (ENGIS) Headquarters, 4 Chisimdi Ukpata Close, Ebeano Estate, Enugu
• Enugu State Ministry of Housing, State Secretariat, Enugu
• Nsukka Local Government Area Secretariat, Nsukka
• Enugu East Local Government Area Secretariat, Nkwo Nike

The government strongly urged all landowners to visit any of the centres and complete the process as soon as possible. They stressed that participation is key to the success of the exercise and to protect landowners' interests.

“Full participation is essential for the success of this exercise and the protection of every genuine landowner’s interest,” the government stated.

This exercise is expected to improve the Enugu State land administration system. It will ensure that survey records are verified, digitally captured, mapped out, and can be easily checked. It will also help reduce the chances of losing, damaging, or disputing land records.
