Four die in Lagos truck accident

Four people lost their lives and six others were hurt when a truck with a container flipped over onto a passenger bus on Berger Bridge, heading to Eleko on the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway in Lagos State.

Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, shared this information in a statement on Wednesday.

He explained that the crash happened early Wednesday morning when the truck carrying a 20-foot container struck a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number GME-589 ZU.

Oke-Osanyintolu mentioned that early investigations showed the truck was going uphill on the bridge too fast when it hit the bus.

He added that four adult men died at the scene, while six others suffered different degrees of injuries.

He said, "A preliminary investigation revealed that the truck was ascending the bridge at excessive speed when it collided with the bus. In an attempt to avoid the crash, the truck driver lost control, causing the truck to overturn onto the bus.

"The impact was severe and tragically resulted in the loss of four adult males who were confirmed dead at the scene, while six other adult males sustained varying degrees of injuries."

He also said that LASEMA responders, along with the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Nigeria Police Force, secured the area, gave first aid to the injured, and took them to Epe General Hospital for treatment.

According to him, a private crane was brought in to recover the overturned truck and container, and to safely remove the bodies of the deceased.

He noted that recovery operations were still going on, and traffic management measures had been put in place to ensure safety along the road.

The state government expressed sympathy to the families of those who died and wished the injured a quick recovery.
