LASEPA Celebrates 30 Years of Environmental Protection in Lagos

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has shown its dedication to keeping Lagos clean and safe as it marks 30 years of work in environmental protection. The agency focuses on managing pollution and promoting a healthy environment for all.

On Thursday, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Environmental Services, Dr Omobolaji Tajudeen-Gaji, made this known at a press conference for LASEPA’s 30th anniversary. He called this milestone a time to look back at what the agency has done for the environment and sustainable growth.

Tajudeen-Gaji praised LASEPA for its efforts in tackling pollution, especially noise and air pollution. He noted that the agency has played a key part in raising environmental standards throughout Lagos.

He urged residents and business owners to take environmental rules seriously. They should engage and understand these rules instead of waiting for enforcement actions or notices to comply.

"Environmental compliance should not be driven solely by enforcement. Individuals and business operators must understand the importance of adhering to environmental regulations without waiting until abatement notices are issued," he said.

The General Manager of LASEPA, Dr Babatunde Ajayi, called this anniversary a big deal for the agency. He said it was a chance to review what they have achieved and recognize how they have improved life for people in Lagos.

Ajayi mentioned that LASEPA has made significant progress in the last 30 years. This includes tightening environmental rules, better pollution monitoring, and expanding the agency's ability to tackle new environmental issues.

He shared that LASEPA focuses on areas such as controlling noise pollution, managing air quality, monitoring industrial pollution, and enforcing regulations.

Ajayi added that the agency is adapting to the challenges that come with Lagos’s fast growth and increasing population.

He also pointed out a new online reporting system that allows residents to report environmental issues and track their complaints.

"Residents can now report environmental violations and track their complaints through our online portal, making environmental reporting more accessible, efficient and responsive," he said.

On the topic of enforcement, Ajayi said LASEPA continues to take action against noise pollution and other environmental offenses. He stressed that enforcing rules is necessary to ensure everyone follows the environmental standards.

He also talked about LASEPA's involvement in Nigeria’s carbon market and climate initiatives, saying the agency plays an important part in promoting environmental sustainability and related programs.

Ajayi highlighted the agency's government-owned environmental lab as a key asset. It helps with monitoring, investigations, and making informed regulatory decisions.

He thanked past leaders, former General Managers, and staff for their contributions to the agency’s mission over the years.

Ajayi stated that this 30th anniversary is not just about celebrating achievements. It also recognizes the commitment and growth that have shaped LASEPA's work over the past three decades.

He reaffirmed LASEPA’s promise to improve environmental governance, enhance pollution control, and promote sustainable practices in Lagos.
