Nigerians Should Learn from US Elections, Says ADC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on Nigerians to take lessons from the 2026 United States midterm elections. In these elections, the Democratic Party beat President Donald Trump’s Republican Party and took control of both chambers of Congress.

The ADC pointed out that the US results show how voters can use their votes to hold leaders accountable.

In a statement on Wednesday, signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said the election results showed that political power really belongs to the citizens.

The Democrats’ wins in the House of Representatives and Senate were a big blow to Trump and his Republican Party, which had been in charge of both chambers before the elections.

The ADC said, “Americans have shown that when politicians become arrogant, when policies punish ordinary people, and when those in power mistake popularity for a permanent license to govern, the ballot box remains the ultimate instrument of accountability.

“American voters understand something Nigerians must also learn: elections are about the welfare of the citizens, not sentiments, political loyalties or personality cults. No leader is bigger than the people, and no political party is entitled to power forever.”

The party, which has former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar running against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, noted that Nigerians have suffered years of economic hardship, rising insecurity, and fewer opportunities.

“If Americans can use their votes to demand better, Nigerians can do the same.”

The ADC urged Nigerians, especially voters, to think about their welfare and interests when choosing their leaders in the upcoming general elections.
