Ogun State and Federal Government Join Forces to Investigate Methane Gas Emissions in Ijebu-Ode
Ogun State and the Federal Government are collaborating to investigate methane gas emissions in Ijebu-Ode. Residents are assured of safety measures.

The Ogun State Government is working closely with the Federal Government to look into methane gas emissions in Ijebu-Ode and surrounding areas. They are assuring residents that they are taking real steps to find the source of the emissions and stop them from happening again.
This move follows four reported gas emission incidents in Ijebu-Ode and nearby communities. These incidents have caused a strong, unpleasant smell and raised worries among residents about possible health and environmental risks.
On Tuesday, the Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Kayode Akinmade, shared a statement. He said a joint team of experts from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), along with development partners, has started investigating the emissions.
The team is led by Mr Omonedo Prosper, the Deputy Director of the Commission. They are currently looking into the patterns of emissions and possible sources of the gas, after receiving initial reports from Ogun State officials on the measures already taken.
The NUPRC team is ready to work with Ogun State and other agencies to find out why the emissions are happening and create a long-term solution. Akinmade emphasized that the state government is committed to sharing the investigation results quickly and implementing necessary preventive measures. They also plan to provide health support and monitoring for the affected communities.
Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu East, and Odogbolu are some of the areas that need attention as the investigation and monitoring continue. "We believe that working with the Federal Government and research institutions is key. The Ogun State Government is determined to follow the recommendations of the investigation team once they finish their work and to take real steps to ensure the emissions do not happen again," he said.

The government assured that the safety and welfare of residents are their top priorities. They plan to keep engaging with relevant federal agencies and experts until the issue is fully resolved.
After the incidents, Professor Ikhane Phillips, the Head of the Department of Earth Sciences at Olabisi Onabanjo University, said that geochemical analysis will help find out the type and source of the gas. He also mentioned that geophysical investigations will show how the gas might be moving underground.
He added that ongoing site inspections and lab tests will provide the scientific basis needed to determine the right actions to take. Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Environment, Mr Ola Oresanya, said the state is closely collaborating with the Federal Government to address the issue.
Oresanya also emphasized the need for better information sharing to calm public worries and advised residents to take precautions during times of bad smell. He reassured them that the gas is not dangerous.
Ijebu Para’po Info Media has praised Governor Abiodun and the NUPRC for their efforts to address the recurring emissions. The group commended the Ogun State Government for listening to residents and staying engaged with the right authorities. They are hopeful that the ongoing investigation will lead to a lasting solution.
