Oluremi Tinubu, the wife of Nigeria’s president, Bola Tinubu, has confirmed that she donated Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to the National Youth Wing of the All Progressives Congress (APC). This move is to help with grassroots work ahead of the 2027 elections.

Mrs Tinubu shared this news on Sunday during a campaign strategy meeting with regional APC youth leaders. The meeting was led by the party’s National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel, at the State House in Abuja.

This announcement came just hours after Mr Israel posted a video showing seven brand-new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUVs. He mentioned that he had given these vehicles to selected youth leaders to aid their election mobilization efforts.

However, Mr Israel later deleted the post after it sparked many reactions on social media. Many Nigerians questioned the cost of the SUVs and why expensive vehicles were being used for political work when many are struggling economically.

During the meeting, Mrs Tinubu mentioned that her office would provide campaign materials, footwear, and other items to help the APC youth leaders in their campaign efforts. She also noted that she donated more utility vehicles to help them move around and boost their outreach.

Mrs Tinubu urged the APC youth leaders to work harder on grassroots mobilization. She stressed the importance of getting real results instead of just focusing on social media activity. She encouraged them to be independent, show competence, and come up with original ideas in their political work.

She repeated that the youth leaders should aim for real political results instead of just social media engagements. She also highlighted the need for young leaders to be self-reliant and versatile, without depending on their parents or others for guidance.

This is not the first time Mrs Tinubu has made donations for public use. Earlier, she gave 50 buses and 30 tricycles to her former school, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), in Ile-Ife, Osun State. This was in response to complaints about transport issues on campus.

In a statement about the donation, the university said it aimed to help students with transportation and improve movement within the school. "The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, wishes to inform the University Community, particularly our dear students, of the successful receipt of 50 buses and 30 tricycles graciously donated by the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON," the statement said.

The university described the donation as a show of Mrs Tinubu’s commitment to student welfare. They said the vehicles would help significantly reduce transport challenges on campus.

PREMIUM TIMES reached out to Mrs Tinubu’s spokesperson, Busayo Kukoyi, and Mr Israel for comments on the public reactions, including concerns about the vehicle costs and the donation's circumstances. But there was no response at the time of this report.

After the meeting, Mr Israel confirmed the donation and thanked Mrs Tinubu for the SUVs for the APC National Youth Wing. He said these vehicles would help youth leaders reach rural areas, especially places that are hard to access in the South-east and South-west as they work on grassroots mobilization.

"The main goal is to share the administration’s achievements in healthcare, education, and welfare, especially programs like the student loan initiative and the setup of primary healthcare centres," he said.

Mr Israel also mentioned that he would start a nationwide mobilization tour to promote the administration’s programs and gather support for President Bola Tinubu’s second-term campaign. He plans to take the administration’s message to rural areas and highlight government efforts in healthcare, education, and welfare.

He called for better coordination among groups supporting Mr Tinubu’s re-election. He said all such groups should work within the official party structure. "All APC groups must align with the official party structure. All support groups, including PBAT, Door to Door, City Boy, and Tinubu Again, are expected to work directly with the APC," he said.

This meeting was part of the APC youth wing's preparations for grassroots mobilization ahead of the 2027 general elections.
