The Delta State Police Command has arrested nine people in a statewide effort to stop illegal roadblocks and unauthorized money collection along highways in the state.
The police said this action follows the Federal Government’s order to put an end to extortion and crime on Nigerian roads.
In a statement released on Sunday, SP Bright Edafe, the state police public relations officer, said the operation started on Friday. They focused on trouble spots where illegal tolls and roadblocks have made it hard for vehicles to move and have put drivers in danger.
The statement mentioned that the arrests happened at key places like the Head Bridge area at the Delta-Anambra border and the Benin-Asaba Expressway close to Agbor.
"The Delta State Police Command has launched a statewide clampdown on illegal road blocks and unauthorized revenue collection along highways, in strict compliance with the Federal Government directive to rid Nigerian roads of extortion and criminal activities," the statement said.
It continued, "During the operation, nine suspects were arrested at strategic locations, including the Head Bridge axis, the boundary between Delta and Anambra states, and the Benin-Asaba Expressway by Agbor."
The police confirmed that all the suspects are in custody and will face charges in court after the investigations are done.
The command promised to keep working to restore order on highways across the state. They also warned that similar operations will happen in other areas.
"The Delta State Police Command reiterates its commitment to restoring sanity and safety to highways across the state."
"Similar enforcement exercises will be replicated in other parts of Delta to ensure that motorists and commuters travel without harassment or illegal levies," the statement added.
The police also called on the public to support law enforcement officers during the ongoing operations.
