Police Begin Investigation into Pastor's Death in Akwa Ibom

The Nigeria Police Force in Akwa Ibom State has started looking into the death of a pastor, Etetim Udo. His body was found in his church in Oron Local Government Area.

Police say early findings suggest it might be a suicide, but they are checking all possibilities to find out what really happened.

PREMIUM TIMES earlier reported that the pastor was the founder and General Overseer of Power in the Word of God for the World Ministries. His church is on Etim Inyang Street in Oron. He was found dead inside the church on Thursday, and videos of the scene have been shared on social media.

On Saturday, police spokeswoman in Akwa Ibom, Timfon John, who is a deputy superintendent of police, explained that officers received an emergency call around 8:18 a.m. on Thursday. A resident noticed many people gathered at the church.

The resident mentioned that he had parked his motorcycle on the premises and later spoke to the deceased's children. They told him their father had possibly taken his own life.

Police officers quickly arrived at the scene. "Preliminary observations revealed that the deceased was found suspended with a twisted mosquito net rope," the statement said.

Investigators took photos, collected evidence for forensic testing, and moved the body to a hospital. There, a doctor confirmed that the pastor was dead. Police said the body is now in a mortuary waiting for an autopsy.

Police Warn Against Speculation

The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom, Baba Azare, has promised the public that the investigation will be detailed and fair.

Mr Azare urged anyone with useful information to come forward and help the investigation. He also warned against spreading unverified news that could mislead investigators or cause panic.

"Although early findings suggest a case of suspected suicide, the Command wants to make it clear that investigations are ongoing. We are working to find out all the facts and rule out other possibilities," the statement said.

The police also reiterated their promise to investigate every reported case properly to ensure justice. They will continue their efforts to protect lives and property throughout the state.
