Police Chief Orders Trial for Officers Who Extorted ICPC Chairman

The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory, Ahmed Sanusi, has ordered a trial for four police officers. These officers are accused of leaving their duty posts and extorting ₦52,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu (SAN).

The FCT Police Command shared this information in a statement on Tuesday. The spokesperson for the command, SP Josephine Adeh, provided the details.

The officers involved are ASP Clement Ehigala, ASP Sunday Okpe, Inspector Samuel Onoja, and Sergeant Yakubu Emmanuel.

According to the command, the incident took place on July 11, 2026, around 3:34 p.m. The officers allegedly abandoned their posts and went to the Banex Plaza Junction in Wuse II. There, they conducted an unauthorized traffic enforcement operation.

"During the illegal traffic duty, the officers stopped a driver, claiming he broke traffic rules, and extorted ₦52,000 from him. The driver was later identified as Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, the ICPC chairman," the statement said.

After receiving a complaint, CP Ahmed Sanusi ordered the immediate arrest of the four officers. He directed that they face trial for abandoning their duty posts, conducting unauthorized traffic enforcement, and engaging in extortion.

The command stated that disciplinary action has started against the officers as per police regulations.

"The Command has begun disciplinary proceedings against the officers in line with established police rules. We are committed to professionalism, accountability, and zero tolerance for misconduct by our personnel," Adeh mentioned.

This latest news comes after the police commissioner revealed last Monday that four officers had been arrested for allegedly extorting the ICPC chairman during an illegal stop-and-search operation in the Banex area.

Sanusi called the officers "thieves" who had no right to wear police uniforms. He said they left their assigned posts, set up an illegal checkpoint, and extorted the chairman without knowing who he was.

He promised that any officer found guilty would face strict disciplinary measures, including dismissal if necessary.
