One person has died, and 11 travellers who were kidnapped during a bandit attack on the Gummi, Sokoto Road have been rescued by the Zamfara State Police Command.
The police said the attack happened at around 10:30 am on Tuesday. Suspected bandits ambushed a trailer carrying vegetables and passengers.
Yazid Abubakar, the state Police Public Relations Officer, shared details in a statement. He said the gunmen shot at the vehicle, making the driver lose control and leave the road.
One passenger, named Dan Fati Umar from Gidan Ganja in Bukuyum Local Government Area, was killed in the attack. Another passenger got serious injuries and is now getting medical help.
The statement said, "On 21st July 2026, at about 10:30 a.m., a large number of armed bandits ambushed a trailer transporting vegetables and other passengers along the Gummi, Sokoto Road.
"During the attack, the assailants opened fire on the vehicle, causing the driver to lose control and veer off the road.
"Tragically, one passenger, identified as Dan Fati Umar, male, of Gidan Ganja via Bukuyum, lost his life during the incident, while another victim sustained serious injuries and is receiving medical attention.
"The bandits abducted an unspecified number of passengers."
The police added, "However, following a swift response by police operatives and other security personnel, 11 kidnapped victims were successfully rescued.
"The rescued victims have since been reunited with their families."
The Commissioner of Police, Ahmad Muhammad Bello, expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased. He also wished a quick recovery to the injured person.
He promised residents that the police are dedicated to protecting lives and property. He urged the public to keep giving reliable information to security agencies to help with their work.
