PSC fires three top police officers, lowers rank of 16 others

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has fired three senior police officers and demoted 16 others due to misconduct.

Torty Kalu, the commission’s spokesperson, shared this news in a statement on Wednesday. He added that the PSC also gave “severe reprimands” to 21 officers and “ordinary reprimands” to two others.

Three officers were cleared of any wrongdoing. Some officers who were previously suspended were also reinstated into the Nigeria Police Force, Mr Kalu said.

These decisions came from the PSC’s plenary meeting at its headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday. The meeting was led by Hashimu Argungu, the chairman and a retired deputy inspector-general of police.

The commission did not reveal the names of the dismissed or demoted officers. They also did not share specific details about the misconduct involved.

However, Mr Argungu emphasized the PSC’s strict stance against corruption, human rights violations, interference in land and civil matters, and other misconduct within the police.

Mr Argungu also promised the public that the commission would keep working to resolve disciplinary cases quickly.

He praised members of the commission’s Standing Committee on Discipline and Legal Matters and other officials for their efforts in reviewing disciplinary cases and appeals.

PREMIUM TIMES reports that the PSC is responsible for promoting and disciplining senior police officers across Nigeria.
