As the January 16, 2027 presidential election approaches, Seyi Makinde, the Oyo State Governor and presidential candidate for the Allied Peoples Movement, has unveiled his Reset Agenda manifesto. He promises reforms in the economy, education, security, and the political system.

During the manifesto presentation in Abuja on Wednesday, Makinde shared that his goal is to tackle Nigeria’s issues and bring back the vision of the country’s founders.

He said his planned administration would focus on policies that improve living conditions, create job opportunities, and strengthen public institutions.

"My simple proposition is that government must make life easier for the people. We must develop people’s abilities and expand their access to opportunities. We must also have institutions that work," he stated.

Makinde highlighted that government promises should come with clear plans for implementation, measurable targets, and accountable institutions.

He pointed out that a significant issue in the country is the gap between macroeconomic reforms and the quality of life for citizens.

"For us, macroeconomic reforms must translate into improvements in people’s lives. What does macroeconomic stability mean if it does not improve the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians?" he asked.

On economic matters, the governor suggested a system where Nigerians benefit from higher crude oil revenue. He argued that any extra earnings beyond government budget limits should lead to better public welfare.

He also promised that within his administration’s first 100 days, there would be clear performance targets and demanded accountability in government spending.

Regarding electricity, Makinde urged Nigerians to hold the Federal Government responsible for its pledge to enhance power supply. He insisted that the government must keep tackling challenges in power generation and distribution, despite the electricity autonomy law.

Political Reforms

On the political front, he proposed that presidential candidates should need at least 51 percent of votes to win elections. He believes this would promote wider political cooperation.

He also suggested forming a transitional government of national unity and a national conference to discuss the country’s problems and agree on a shared direction.

His running mate, Lawal Musa Daura, condemned the suppression of opposition parties. He stressed that a fair competition is necessary for democracy to thrive.

He stated that a strong opposition helps the government and reduces political tensions.

Daura identified education, the economy, security, and the political system as the four key areas of the Reset Agenda. He promised that their administration would put national interests above personal gains.
