Senator Shehu Buba Umar: Innocent Until Proven Guilty

All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all creation. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and all his Companions.

Dear brothers and sisters! Senator Shehu Buba Umar, who represents Bauchi South Senatorial District, is facing serious allegations. These accusations link him to banditry, financing terrorism, and supporting insurgents in Northern Nigeria.

Senator Shehu Buba Umar, who was once the Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, has had these claims come from several sources.

For instance, Bauchi State Governor Bala Muhammed accused him of sponsoring two people with ties to terrorism for the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage. Senator Shehu Buba Umar responded by saying the individuals were chosen from a list provided by traditional leaders in his district.

In September 2026, a boy named Hassan released video testimonies claiming that Senator Shehu Buba Umar worked with notorious bandit groups. The videos say he helped the brother of bandit leader Dogo Gide get military training and connect him to wanted bandit leader Bello Turji.

Reports show that Abubakar Idris, a suspected terrorist arrested in August 2024, also named Senator Shehu Buba Umar during investigations.

Senator Shehu Buba Umar has strongly denied these allegations. He called them baseless, malicious, and politically driven lies aimed at damaging his reputation before the 2027 Bauchi State gubernatorial election, where he is running for the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).

He explained that some of these attacks come from a misunderstanding of a condolence visit he made to charcoal sellers who were attacked in his district. He also pointed to manipulation from political rivals. Senator Shehu Buba Umar has said he will take legal action against those spreading the viral videos.

This controversy has sparked a big political and security debate across Nigeria. Angry at the alleged terror connections, grassroots groups and voters in Bauchi South have started a petition to recall the senator.

The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN) has urged the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the Department of State Services (DSS) to carry out a clear and thorough investigation. This is to clear public doubt and protect national security.

Groups like the Bauchi Forum of Gentlemen (BAFOG) have come to Senator Shehu Buba Umar's defense. They describe the reports as smear campaigns meant to create religious and political chaos.

Respected brothers and sisters! Allah Almighty gives a timeless rule for social peace in Surah Al-Hujurat. He says:
“O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.” [Qur’an, 49:6-7]

There are Qur’anic verses that guide Muslims everywhere, especially about serious matters that could lead to war and insecurity. Such issues can also harm society and disrupt families. To prevent these effects, the Qur’an sets important rules for all believers.

These verses deal with how people interact, whether at home, in markets, or in politics and economics. They talk about the news people share, which can be personal or political. In the past, news spread directly from person to person. Now, we have radios, the internet, and social media, making it easy to spread all kinds of news, true or false.

Various intelligence agencies use the media to spread rumors that support their own interests. These Qur’anic verses warn about the dangers of news that can harm individuals, groups, and even the nation. Allah the Most High says:
“If there comes to you a disobedient one with information.”

Who is the disobedient? It is someone who crosses Allah’s limits and does not fear Him, following only their desires. If such a person tells you a story, you must verify it. Ask trusted people and check the evidence. Believing a false story could lead you to harm an innocent person.

Then you will regret it, and Allah will hold you accountable for your actions. False stories can damage relationships, even leading to serious consequences like divorce or violence.

Dear brothers and sisters! In Islam, there is a rule based on justice:
“The accused is innocent until proven guilty.”

Islam requires proof and verification, and we should not rely on rumors or the words of untrustworthy people. This applies to religious, social, and political leaders too. While they can be criticized, we should not judge without evidence.

Allah the Most High says:
“And let not the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.” [Qur’an, 5:8]

We must be fair in our judgments, even toward those we dislike. Religious leaders are not infallible, but there can be political motives behind judgments about them.

During political conflicts, contradictory statements can arise to sway opinions. We need reliable standards in security matters too. In economic issues, people may spread rumors to manipulate prices.

The Qur’anic verse I mentioned is a rule we should follow: We should not accept anything unless the source is trustworthy, whether it is a newspaper, political party, or individual.

Fellow brothers and sisters! We are in a difficult time, especially with the upcoming elections filled with rumors and lies. Let this Qur’anic verse guide your beliefs to ensure fairness in all areas of life.

Dear servants of Allah! Islamic law says every accused person is considered innocent until proven guilty by a competent judge. This rule protects innocent people from wrongful punishment.

Islamic law uses the concept ‘Al-aslu bara’at al-zimmah’, which means a person is free from blame unless proven otherwise. The accuser must show solid proof. The accused does not have to prove their innocence.

Therefore, under both Islamic law and the Nigerian Constitution, an accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Section 36(5) of the 1999 Constitution states that anyone charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. An arrest or allegation is not a conviction. The state or prosecutor must prove the accused's guilt. They need to provide enough clear evidence to convince the court.

Ya Allah, Unite us in bliss in Jannatul Firdaus.
Ya Allah, Give us the strength to be good parents and examples for our children.
Ya Allah, Protect our children from our mistakes.
Ya Allah, Bless us with righteous children.
Ya Allah, Make our children the coolness of our eyes.
Ya Allah, Protect our family from evil and calamities.
Ya Allah, Keep our children safe from harm and disbelief.
Ya Allah, Grant our children success in religion and in life.
Ya Allah, Unite our entire lineage in Jannatul Firdaus.
Ya Allah, Make our children workers for Your religion and scholars.
Ya Allah, Save our family from the Hellfire and let us enter Jannatul Firdaus without judgment.
Ya Allah, you are Al-Gaffar, Forgive our parents.
Ya Allah, Grant them rewards in this world and the next.
Ya Allah, Make us a comfort to them in their old age.
Ya Allah, Help our siblings succeed in this world and the next.
Ya Allah, Protect our parents and family from illness as they age.
Ya Allah, Forgive the sins of those who have passed away in our family and the Ummah.
Ya Allah, Grant them peace in the afterlife until they meet You.
Ya Allah, Save us from the trials of Dajjal and the Last Day.
Ya Allah, Help our family and friends waiting for children.
Ya Allah, Unite the hearts of our companions working for You.
Ya Allah, Heal the hearts of those facing family difficulties.
Ya Allah, forgive all believing men and women.
Ya Allah, Heal the sick among us.
Ya Allah, Protect our brothers and sisters in war zones and from persecution.
Ya Allah, Relieve their suffering and elevate their status.
Ya Allah, Bring down modern oppressors and help those in need.
Ya Rahman, we call on You to protect all Muslim believers facing hardship.
Ya Allah, answer our prayers. You are the All Hearing, All Knowing! Ameen.
