Police nab four suspects for phone theft in Delta

The Delta State Police have arrested four people linked to a phone theft gang. They also recovered nine brand-new Android phones that were reportedly stolen from shops in Asaba and nearby areas.

On Monday, the police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, shared details about the arrests. The suspects were caught on July 25 during a police operation at their hideout on St Brigid’s Road in Asaba.

The suspects are Johna Omarocha, Kelvin Onogho, Nkechi Nnaji, and Ufuoma Joshua.

Edafe stated that a search of their hideout led to the recovery of nine brand-new Android phones, all still in their cartons.

According to the police, their initial investigation showed that the suspects focused on stealing new phones from retail shops by pretending to be customers. They used newspapers to cover the phones displayed in shops before sneaking away with them.

SP Bright Edafe also mentioned that the female suspect in the group sent the stolen phones to Lagos. There, they changed the international mobile equipment identity numbers before selling the devices.

“The suspects have confessed to the crime. We are still working to catch other members of the gang who are on the run. We also want to find the owners of the recovered phones,” the statement added.

The Commissioner of Police for Delta State, Yemi Oyeniyi, spoke on the operation. He promised that the police will keep fighting all types of crime.

He encouraged the public, especially shop owners and business operators, to be aware of their surroundings. He asked them to quickly report any suspicious persons or activities to the police.
